All About the Island

Jamaica is located in the Caribbean Sea and has heavy rainfall throughout the year. The climate is warm and tropical, so there is a high rate of humidity. It is 154.1 miles long and 52.2 miles wide. As of 2014, it has a population of 2.8 million and four major ethnic groups.

Original inhabitants to Jamaica grew corn and yams. As of 2015, the three main crops are sugar cane, bananas and mangoes. None of these crops is native to the island. Also, the national drink of Jamaica is rum. A local mixed drink is rum with coconut water. The national meal of Jamaica is Ackee and Saltfish and is usually served at breakfast.

Ian Fleming, creator of the "James Bond" series, built his dream home in Jamaica and named it Goldeneye. He has penned 10 Bond thrillers there. It is an appropriate place for a famous European to live considering the island is still under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II but only as a British Commonwealth country. Another famous movie, "Cool Runnings," was based on the first Jamaican bob sled team to compete in the Winter Olympics in 1988.

Jamaica was the first Western country to build a railroad. Also, its telephone system was so well developed that AT&T copied its design in America. It was the first nation to launch its own website in 1994.

Jamaica is home to seven Sandals Resorts.  Sandals Royal Caribbean, Sandals Montego Bay and The Sandals Inn are all between 5 -10 minutes from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.  While all of the properties are beautiful locations for destination weddings, Sandals Negril is a popular choice for honeymoon couples who have tied the knot at Beaches Negril with family and friends in attendance.  Sandals South Coast is a little further away but boasts all oceanfront rooms.  Both Sandals Ochi Beach Resort and Sandals Royal Plantation are about 90 minutes from Sangster International Airport but guests can now fly into Kingston.
