Travel Agents Give Back to School Children Across Jamaica

“From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.” ~ Arthur Ashe

I retired from teaching and discovered a whole new way to help children in need. School age children in the Caribbean must wear uniforms to go to school. While they are supplied with the books they need to learn how to read and write, many of those books are outdated and in short supply. The Sandals Foundation has made it their mission to help support those little people who need an education to lead a productive and fulfilling adult life. As travel advisors, they have given us a way to help support that mission. Every time we visit one of the resorts we “pack for a purpose” and bring backpacks filled with school supplies: pencils, composition books, pictures books, early readers, pencils, erasers, post it notes, markers, crayons, and even deflated soccer balls for them to use on the playground. For the older students we pack memory sticks so they can save their work when they finish using the school computer. Believe me, these kids do not have home computers and appreciate the ability to save their files for another school day.

If you travel to the Caribbean and stay at a Sandals or Beaches resort, you too can “pack for a purpose” and bring school supplies for these beautiful children. Don’t just drop it off when you check in. Ask to see the General Manager, hotel manager, or sales manager and take a photo with him or her. Post it to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or whatever social network you choose. Let the world know that you care. Believe me, it feels wonderful!
